Overview
Asian people are one of the minority ethnicity that does not believe in mental health. Furthermore, mental health illness is considered a taboo in the Asian community along with the stigma they put upon them. The goal of this poster series is to raise mental health awareness in the Asian community by using familiar everyday items familiar to the target audience, Asians.
Ginseng is known for its medical benefits such as boosting energy, low blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and treating diabetes. Asians are crazy about having good health at all times but what they do not know is that their overall health will also depend on their mental health. However, ginseng does not help with mental illness. Ironically, using the ginseng imagery will catch the target audience’s attention for their interest in health, and will come across the mental health message.
Tiger balm is one of the best pain remedies used in Asian households. It is similar to Vicks but much stronger and it is often used to relieve any muscle pain, headaches, and other physical pain. Some people believe that the Tiger Balm can make any pain go away.
Mahjong is a game from China, played with tiles that are similar in size to dominoes but engraved with Chinese symbols and characters and divided into suits and honors. Instead of using dominos, Mahjong was used to relate to the target audience. In addition, they are arranged certain way to show a chain reaction in the poster illustration that relates to mental illness. Family is also a big part of the Asian community and ignoring mental illness overall, whether it’s themselves or another family member can cause a negative impact on the whole family.
